En esta tesis se analizan aspectos concernientes a la educación superior en el Ecuador, así como también se realiza una retrospectiva de la evolución de la educación ecuatoriana, se incluyen políticas públicas del sistema educativo, procesos de evaluación y acreditación con especial énfasis en el caso de estudio: la Universidad nacional de Chimborazo – UNACH. Una educación superior de calidad es necesaria para satisfacer necesidades de la población y lograr desarrollo sostenible del país; la educación de calidad es una herramienta esencial para la resolución de problemas en la sociedad, por medio de la investigación científica se aumentarán los conocimientos y se tendrán profesionales altamente adiestrados, proactivos, eficientes y con un enfoque humanista. La razón de ser de las universidades son la formación de profesionales y la investigación científica, por estos motivos los sistemas de educación deben estar bien formados, las instituciones deben cumplir con los requerimientos académicos y de infraestructura, los docentes deben estar formados en áreas específicas, cumplir con méritos, publicar libros y artículos científicos, los procesos de enseñanza – aprendizaje deben estar orientados hacia la excelencia académica y el Estado debe formular políticas públicas y garantizar el mejoramiento continuo de la educación en todos sus niveles. In this thesis there are many issues concerning to higher education in Ecuador and they are analyzed, as well a retrospective of the evolution of ecuadorian education is also performed, it includes public policies of the education system, process of evaluation and accreditation in universities, with special emphasis on the case of study: University of Chimborazo - UNACH. A quality higher education should meet needs of the population and achieve sustainable development, quality education is an essential tool for solving problems in society, through scientific research knowledge will be increased and society will have proactive, efficient with a humanistic approach and highly trained professionals. The reasons of being universities are professional training and the scientific research, for these reasons education systems must be well trained, institutions must meet academic and infrastructure requirements, teachers must be trained in specific areas, get merits, publish books and scientific articles; teaching – learning processes should be oriented towards academic excellence, in addition the State must formulate and reformulate public policies to ensure the continuous improvement of education at all levels.
