Consumada la revolución por la independencia de Guayaquil el 9 de Octubre de 1820, nació la idea de una medalla conmemorativa de tan glorioso acontecimiento para concederla a los que se distinguieron en esta jornada. A la Junta Militar, presidida por el ya Coronel don Luis de Urdaneta, se sometió el proyecto, encargándole presentar el modelo respectivo.
