Description: The Guatemalan government I s counter insurgency campaigns of the 1980's resulted in the deliberate assassination of more than one hundred thousand people and the enforced exile of more than fifty thousand Guatemalans. In exile, Guatemalan refugees faced not only their memories of their violent past but also structured radical changes in their way of life. The restrictions placed upon them by living in United Nations sponsored camps transformed household economies and constrained refugees in multiethnic compounds.
