Entre 1930 y 1937 la población indígena de la Sierra ecuatoriana protagonizó diversos hechos que fueron tratados en las noticias y editoriales en medios de prensa nacionales. El autor compiló y analizó una muestra de textos periodísticos, a fin de establecer cómo se construyó al sujeto indígena en los diarios, en un contexto histórico marcado por el poder hacendatario. Morán trabajó piezas de la época, publicadas por El Comercio y El Telégrafo. Según su estudio, en el discurso de la prensa se asoció a la población indígena con la idea de amenaza al orden público, al mismo tiempo que se le negó su ciudadanía y su reconocimiento como sujeto político.
Un aporte particular en esta investigación es el trabajo con Ñucanchic Allpa, un periódico creado por el partido comunista, cuyo material aparecía en kichwa y español. El autor volvió a traducir los textos kichwas al español y desarrolló una reflexión sobre cómo se expresó, en estas piezas, el encuentro entre dicho partido político y la población indígena.
