El concepto de gobernanza energética que se construye y somete a prueba en el trabajo es bastante convincente. El trabajo ilumina las interacciones entre el Estado, la sociedad y la economía. Y lo hace basándose sobre estudios de casos y no postulados ideológicos. Esta postura le permite en particular destruir un “mito” que ha sido vehiculado por muchos analistas: el “vaciamiento” del Estado. Para Fontaine, insistir sobre la diversidad de actores no equivale a menospreciar el papel del Estado, ya que ha jugado y sigue jugando un papel importante en la petropolítica.
