CHASQUI recoge en esta nota las experiencias personales de cuatro destacados especialistas en desastres naturales, a saber: Daniel Alonso Domínguez, Cuba; Julio Kuroiwa, Perú; Roberto Carrión Game, Colombia; y Sergio Martínez de Nicaragua. Afines de mayo de 1988, una noticia entró en los teletipos de radio Caracol de Colombia. Un terremoto había destruido la ciudad de Santiago de Cuba. Había un saldo de miles de muertos y heridos y la población se encontraba movilizada para impedir mayores calamidades. La magnitud del desastre era incalculable.
