La impunidad de los criminales es un tema de debate público en Brasil. Se tienen indicadores crecientes de criminalidad que estiman que solo el 10% de los delitos contra la vida son procesados por la justicia. Mientras tanto, la politización de la seguridad tiene gran audiencia en los medios de comunicación. Las zonas aún no pacificadas de los barrios periféricos de las grandes y medianas ciudades todavía sufren las acciones armadas de los escuadrones de la muerte. Desde el 2002 hasta el 2006, un alto número de muertes fueron atribuidas a grupos de exterminadores conformados por ciudadanos comunes y miembros de la policía.
Criminal impunity is part of the current public debate in Brazil, since we have growing indicators of criminality that estimate that only 10% of crimes against life reach the Courts. While the politicization of public safety reaches the large audiences of the media, death squads go into action in the non-pacified spaces of the peripheral neighborhoods of the large and medium-sized cities. A large number of deaths of criminals were attributed to “exterminators” that bring together police authorities and citizens.
