La modernización urbana constituye un poderoso proceso de homogenización que licua las diferencias en función del modelo global que somete a todas las sociedades a un mismo mecanismo de funcionamiento basado en la lógica del mercado. En Cuenca, Ecuador, se están produciendo grandes cambios causados por el acelerado crecimiento demográfico y urbano, que afectan directamente al espacio, la estructura social y económica, la cultura y los estilos de vida. Este artículo analiza un espacio público históricamente significativo de Cuenca, la plaza El Otorongo, poniendo en evidencia el conflicto entre las intervenciones técnicas y las claves del pasado de la ciudad.
According to the global development model, urban modernization constitutes a powerful homogenization process that dissolves local differences. It disseminates and implements the same operating mechanism based on the logic of the market in all societies. In the case of Cuenca, Ecuador, the abrupt demographic growth and urban expansion have generated significant changes in the use of space, the social and economic structure, culture, and lifestyles. This article analyzes the effects of the redesign of Plaza El Otorongo and its surroundings. Therefore this research addresses the historical trajectory of this space and highlights the dispute between physical transformations and social memory.
