A lo largo de su historia, el sistema electoral del Ecuador ha estado sujeto a constante revisión, especialmente durante la época democrática. Aunque se ha escrito mucho sobre estos cambios, la teoría existente no proporciona un marco coherente para las reformas. Este artículo explica el cambio electoral en función de diferentes tipos de coaliciones reformistas condicionadas por el tipo de régimen. De acuerdo con la literatura académica, bajo el autoritarismo las élites buscaron cambios electorales para maximizar su poder o minimizar sus pérdidas electorales potenciales frente a desafíos extra sistémicos a través de reformas protectoras.
Throughout its history, Ecuador's electoral system has been subject to constant review, especially during the democratic era. Although much has been written about these changes, existing theory does not provide a coherent framework for reforms. In this article, I explain electoral change as a function of different types of reformist coalitions conditioned by the type of regime. According to the academic literature, under authoritarianism elites sought electoral changes to maximize their power or minimize their potential electoral losses in the face of extra-systemic challenges through protective reforms.
