Hace muchos años en Uruguay se elegían a los abanderados o abanderadas de la escuela, de acuerdo al promedio de sus notas durante toda la primaria. Quien tenía el mejor promedio llevaba la bandera uruguaya, quien contaba con el segundo mejor promedio llevaba la bandera de Artigas y el tercero la de los Treinta y Tres Orientales. Se tenían en cuenta las notas en las diferentes materias y la conducta. Yo tenía excelentes notas en toda la primaria, sabía que mi promedio era uno de los mejores, pero sabía también que no tenía buenas notas en conducta. A veces no aceptaba imposiciones de algunas maestras, a veces tenía que colocar en su sitio a alguno que me molestaba por tener un hermano guerrillero preso, a veces me enojaba cuando veía algún tipo de injusticia y respondía, y si había que pelear me peleaba. Era una época compleja.
