Abstract
Description
This research analyzes the phenomenon of online shaming (escrache) and gender-based violence in Uruguay through the case of the Instagram account @VaronesCarnaval. This account gathered over 250 virtual testimonies within a week in 2 2020, reporting various forms of violence in Uruguayan Carnival. Using a qualitative approach, posts and documents were analyzed, and interviews were conducted with experts to characterize the complaints, evaluate institutional responses, and reflect on the implications in terms of gender and public policies. The findings reveal that most of the complaints referred to sexual offenses against young women, sparking public debate and pressuring institutions to take action. However, institutional responses were inconsistent, and limitations were identified in the implementation of gender-sensitive public policies. Finally, from an anti-punitive feminist perspective, it is concluded that although online shaming arises from frustration with gender-based violence, it fails to escape traditional punitive logics. Despite this, @VaronesCarnaval has been crucial in denaturalizing gender-based violence, opening dialogue on the topic, and bringing sexual violence during Uruguayan Carnival into the public agenda.
