Este artículo tiene como objetivo comprender cómo algunos de los comportamientos cotidianos de las clases populares, antes tolerados, se criminalizaron y reprimieron con fuerza por la Policía de Recife, Brasil en las primeras décadas del siglo XX. A partir del estudio de las noticias publicadas en los principales periódicos editados en la época, este texto trata de presentar la realidad de las calles de la ciudad en la década de los años veinte, investigando las tácticas e invenciones empleadas por los segmentos populares para escapar del control que se intentaba instituir en el espacio de la ciudad en ese período.
The aim of this paper is to understand how some of the daily behavior of the working classes, formerly tolerated, became to be criminalized and forcefully repressed by the police in Recife, Brazil, in the opening decades of the 20th century. Based on an examination of the printed news in the principal edited periodicals of the time, this paper seeks to present the reality experienced on the streets of the city in the 1920s, investigating the tactics and contrivances used by the working class segments to escape from the control that was being forced upon the city during that period.
