La investigación toma como base la teoría de las capacidades de Amartya Sen, que reconoce la pobreza como un fenómeno multidimensional; y el método de medición de Alkire y Foster (2007). Esto nos permite desvincularnos del método unidimensional de estimación de la pobreza en Haití, a partir del que se toman todas las decisiones de combate a la pobreza. Metodológicamente se toma en cuenta las dimensiones siguientes para la estimación de la pobreza: la salud, la educación, la alimentación, la vivienda y el ingreso. Los resultados muestran importantes diferencias con respecto a la medición tradicional de pobreza en Haití, y por consecuente propicia más herramientas a los gobiernos para la lucha contra la pobreza.
In order to estimate poverty in Haiti, this investigation takes account the Amartya Sen’s capability approach theory which recognizes poverty as a multidimensional phenomenon, and the application of the methodology of Alkire and Foster (2007). Methodologically, we take into account the following dimensions for the estimation of poverty: health, education, food, housing and income. The results show important differences from the traditional measurement of poverty in Haiti, and therefore present a more useful tool to government to combat poverty.
