Abstract

Description

Informal work is a social phenomenon that has prevailed and has deepened with the recent economic changes, and it has a negative impact in the lives of workers and their families. The purpose of this research is to show and compare different profiles, size and sociodemographic characteristics of informal work in two main urban areas of Mexico: Mexico City and Monterrey in 2008. In order to go deep into the phenomenon, the study includes a multiple correspondence analysis and uses the income variable for estimating the Theil index that provides the degree of heterogeneity between and within sectors. Results show that informal workers are mostly concentrated in the service, trade, industry, and construction sectors. Besides, some groups with good working conditions as well as groups with underpaid jobs are also identified. Heterogeneity between Mexico City and Monterrey was also found due to the inequalities within the cities --however, inequality within Mexico City is much higher. This research aims to provide elements to understand the evolution and changes of informal work, and to provide knowledge that can help design policies focused on the improvement of informal workers’ living conditions.
