Abstract
Description
This research work approaches the return-migration phenomena of men and women who return to Mexico after an immigration period in the United States of America. Based upon the theoretical proposal of Teresa de Lauretis, an analysis is made on the way in which the international migratory experience affects the gender-identificatory dynamic through the gender division of labour into the categories of remunerated productive work and non-remunerated reproductive work. In women’s case, the international migration represents a constant struggle against the gender normative ideal associated to maternity as a social institution. Because of that, they find solutions to the contradictions on the practical and discursive levels. For men, on the other hand, migration represents a practice which is congruent with the gender normative ideal, which emphasizes the progress and self improvement as defining features of the masculine must-be. This research work was made with a qualitative perspective, using in-depth interviews to returning migrants from the locality of San Francisco Tetlanohcan in Tlaxcala state.
