Varios autores han puesto de relieve el papel del Centro Internacional de Estudios Superiores de Comunicación para América Latina en cuanto a la constitución del ámbito académico en el área de la Comunicación. Apoyando este punto de vista, Gustavo Adolfo León Duarte (2007, p. 17) sostiene que "entre 1960 y 1970 el mayor estímulo para la investigación académica en América Latina tiene su origen en CIESPAL: donde "personalidades paradigmáticas" actuaron como" difusoras de las ciencias de la comunicación".
