Se reportan resultados sobre los usos que da una comunidad indígena a la biodiversidad en un área protegida de la Amazonía ecuatoriana. Sus niveles actuales de uso se comparan, en función de su sostenibilidad, con los registrados cinco años antes. Los resultados muestran una alta tasa anual de crecimiento de la población de la comunidad indígena usuaria, con bajos niveles de ingreso y bienestar. Los datos reportados determinan que los niveles de uso de la biodiversidad por parte de la comunidad indígena siguen siendo cruciales para su subsistencia. La persistencia en el tiempo de las mismas poblaciones silvestres que generan estos servicios ambientales permite inferir su uso sostenible en el período de tiempo analizado. Se plantean dudas sobre la continuidad de esta tendencia en el mediano y largo plazo.
This study reports results on uses given by an indigenous community to biodiversity evolving in a protected area of Ecuadorian Amazon. Its current usage levels are compared in terms of their sustainability with those recorded five years earlier. Results show a high annual growth rate of the population of the indigenous community, as well as low income and welfare levels. Data equally shows that biodiversity use levels by indigenous community remain crucial for their survival. These wild populations persistently generate environmental services over time, which infer their sustainable use in the time period analyzed. However, serious doubts appear on the continuity of this trend in the medium and long term.
