La imagen de las ciudades constituye un campo de disputas por definir la representación
de las cualidades que se estiman apreciables hacia distintos destinatarios.
En el caso de la ciudad de Quito la geografia y la historia han sido los ejes
para la construcción de la imagen de una ciudad poseedora de características
únicas lo que ha fortalecido su vocación turística pensada desde inicios del siglo
XX. El artículo muestra un ejercicio de visibilidad de las asimetrías sociales que
constituyen la historia de Quito, y por extensión de las ciudades latinoamericanas,
a través de postales resultantes de un trabajo foto-etnográfico.
The image of cities constitutes a field of disputes in defining the representation of the qualities that are considered significant in different scenarios. In the case of Quito, geography and history have been essential in building the image of a city that possesses unique characteristics, which has strengthened its tourist vocation imagined since the early twentieth century. The article presents a visibility exercise of social inequalities that compose the history of Quito, and by extension Latin American cities, through postcards that resulted from a photo- ethnographic work.

No caso de Quito, tanto a geografia como a história têm sido os eixos principais nos quais se sustenta a imagem de cidade de características únicas, imagem que fortaleceu sua vocação turística pensada desde os inícios do século XX. O artigo apresenta um exercício de visibilidade das assimetrias sociais presentes na história de Quito e, por extensão, a história das cidades latino-americanas, por meio de cartões postais selecionados por meio de uma pesquisa foto-etnográfica.
