En el presente artículo se revisa la historia colonial y republicana de las representaciones discursivas sobre la Amazonía compartida por Ecuador y Perú, al indagar cómo y cuándo esos significados se desplazan. Se busca contribuir al entendimiento historiográfico de la región como un evento abismal en constante transformación, sujeto a las presiones de la ambición humana y a las limitaciones naturales y culturales. Se plantean las siguientes preguntas: ¿cuándo se transformaron los conceptos y narrativas en torno a la Amazonía?, ¿qué relación tienen esos cambios con los momentos de invención y crisis de los proyectos políticos y económicos que buscaban darle significado a este espacio? Aplicando los marcos de la historia conceptual y la historia intelectual, se aborda el péndulo de relatos utópicos y distópicos sobre la región que se originaron en el siglo XVI, pero que persisten en su condición aporética de larga duración en ambas naciones.
This article reviews the colonial and republican history of discursive representations of the Amazon shared by Ecuador and Peru, examining how and when meanings are displaced. It seeks to contribute to the historiographic understanding of the region as an abysmal event in constant transformation, subject to the pressures of human ambition and natural and cultural limitations. The following questions are posed: When were concepts and narratives about the Amazon transformed and how are these changes related to moments of invention and crisis of the political and economic projects that sought to give meaning to this space? Applying frameworks of conceptual and intellectual history, we address the pendulum of utopian and dystopian narratives about the region that originated in the sixteenth century and that persist in their long-lasting aporetic condition in both nations.
