A primera vista, el turismo comunitario es una alternativa al turismo de masas, con menos impacto ambiental y sociocultural en la comunidad anfitriona. Tiene la
reputación de proveer experiencias auténticas y reales para los turistas, mientras genera ingresos y empleo en la población local. En el año 1996 se inició el proyecto de turismo comunitario en Yunguilla, en el norte del Distrito Metropolitano de Quito. Este artículo analiza los impactos socioculturales en la comunidad, casi veinte años después. A través de entrevistas a profundidad con integrantes de la comunidad y turistas extranjeros, observaciones en el campo durante un año y medio y revisiones de archivos, este trabajo examina el filo estrecho entre riesgos y ventajas para una sociedad que se inserta en el mecanismo capitalista con sus principios de oferta y demanda.
At first sight, community-based tourism seems to be an alternative to mass tourism with less environmental and social-cultural impact for the host community. It has the reputation of providing authentic and real experiences for tourists, while generating income and jobs for the local population. In 1996 a community based tourism project was launched in Yunguilla, a village located in the north of the Metropolitan District of Quito, Ecuador. This article analyzes the social-cultural impacts this program has had on that community nearly two decades later. Through in-depth interviews with hosts and guests, fieldwork conducted over the course of a year and a half and the examination of archives, this work brings into light the thin line between risks and advantages for a society inserting itself into the capitalist mechanism with its principles of supply and demand.
