El Centro Andino de Acción Popular (CAAP), en los años ochenta a través de un grupo multidisciplinario inició un trabajo de investigación y acción para aproximarse a la problemática de la salud y la enfermedad de las comunidades andinas. Parte de estas reflexiones fueron publicadas en dos libros, el primero Política de Salud y Comunidad Andina (1982), el segundo, Medicina Andina: situaciones y respuestas (1992). Las reflexiones que arrojaron estas dos publicaciones siguen siendo grandes interrogantes y aspectos que al día de hoy están vigentes.
