Por antigüedad, impacto e influencia, la comunidad académica peruana de ciencias sociales es la más consolidada de la región andina. Mientras en Perú la antropología y la sociología se fundaron como carreras universitarias en las décadas del cuarenta y cincuenta, su institucionalización fue más tardía en Ecuador (años setenta) y Bolivia (años ochenta) (Martínez 2008, Barragán 2008). Un caso similar ocurrió con la Historia. Mientras que en Ecuador y Bolivia presenta un desarrollo institucional reciente (años setenta y ochenta respectivamente) y con débil expansión editorial, en el Perú es una disciplina de relativa demanda y creciente actividad editorial.
