Hace algunos años, la Municipalidad de Quito tuvo el noble y hermoso pensamiento de honrar la memoria del Gran Mariscal Sucre, erigiéndole una estatua de mármol. Se contrató la obra con el hábil estatuario español don José González Jiménez, quien modeló en yeso, para someterlo á la aprobación del Concejo, un grupo del Héroe en actitud de libertar y protejer á una joven india, símbolo de la patria, y á sus pies postrado el León español, y tirados un cetro y unas cadenas rotas.
