Abstract
Description
The experience of the Andean communities in the social encounter with an extensive society that surrounds them it is sometimes understood only from its objective and functional dimension. By the approach of cultural sociology, this research argues that the social encounter consist of a symbolic dimension in which subjects anchor their everyday experience. The aim is to explain how, from the world of life of Andean communities, processes of resignification are conceived which permit the apprehension of symbolic institutions (powerful outsiders) that are installed in communities and that come from the extensive society. The theoretical definition under study formulates that in the world of the Andean communities there is a primary frame of reference, the matrix of reciprocity, which is displayed as a cultural text that gives meaning to everyday life, providing order and guiding the experience of the subjects that live in these communities. Therefore, when these community members relate with the powerful outsiders, they do it from their own meanings, and ambiguous or misframing situations are produced that will change symbolic structures of the Andean everyday life. The empirical component is formed by the social representations of the community of Julo Chico, located in the northern Potosi region in Bolivia. Two other communities with different degrees of reciprocity (Pocosuco and Chimboata) were also considered as control cases for comparative analysis. The interpretative methodological approach is based on the epistemological notions of cultural sociology, which provide insight to meaningful action as a cultural text prone to hermeneutic reading.
