Description
Iroqueses, crees, hurones, algonquinos, columbios e hiperbóreos poblaban antiguamente el territorio. Diversas expediciones escandinavas visitaron la costa hasta 1347; Sebastián Caboto fue su verdadero descubridor en 1498. Verazzano, en 1521, y Cartier, en 1535, exploraron el río San Lorenzo (Kanawaga indígena). Champlain fundó Quebec en 1608; Hudson en 1610; Baffin, Smith, Lancaster y Behring descubrieron el norte. Varios franceses exploraron los lagos entre 1640 y 1660. Colonia francesa, pasó a Inglaterra tras la Guerra de los Siete Años en 1763. Los estadounidenses atacaron inútilmente en 1812; en 1837-38 hubo una revolución fracasada. En 1841 se reunieron las provincias para formar una sola entidad, la cual obtuvo gobierno propio en 1867, constituyéndose con provincias autónomas. Capital: Ottawa, fundada en 1827.
