En el presente artículo se analiza qué puede aportar la semiótica sociocultural al estudio de los movimientos sociales, poniendo el foco en un caso concreto de Uruguay, país donde si bien existe estabilidad institucional y política, no está exento de reclamos que toman la forma de movimientos sociales. Uno de los más significativos es la Marcha del Silencio, movimiento vinculado a la lucha por la memoria, la verdad y la justicia en relación con la dictadura cívico-militar que gobernó el país entre 1973 y 1985; la marcha, que en 2025 celebró su trigésima edición, funciona como un evento de carácter ritual, convocado anualmente desde 1996 por un conjunto de organizaciones sociales.
This article analyzes what sociocultural semiotics can contribute to the study of social movements, focusing on the specific case of Uruguay, a country where institutional and political stability exists but where, nonetheless, demands take the form of social movements. One of the most significant movements is the Marcha del Silencio [March of Silence], a movement linked to the struggle for memory, truth, and justice in relation to the civil-military dictatorship that governed the country between 1973 and 1985. The march, which in 2025 witnessed its thirtieth anniversary, has been celebrated as an annual ritual by a collection of social organizations since 1996.
