Este artículo analiza las tendencias regionales sobre la relación entre las funciones de seguridad pública y defensa nacional, con énfasis en la historia de El Salvador tras la reforma del sector seguridad a raíz de los Acuerdos de Paz de 1992. Describe el proceso de incorporación de las Fuerzas Armadas en tareas de seguridad pública en El Salvador en los últimos veinte años, dando cuenta de los contextos históricos y la decisiones políticas e institucionales para su mantenimiento en el tiempo, a la vez que propone ideas para el análisis de la militarización de la seguridad interior y algunos criterios para su abordaje.
The article analyzes regional trends in the relationship between public safety and national defense with an emphasis on El Salvador’s security sector reform efforts, particularly in the wake of the 1992 Peace Accords. It describes the process by which Salvadoran armed forces were incorporated in public security tasks over the last twenty years, taking into account the historical context and the political and institutional decisions of maintaining such endeavors over time, while offering new concepts for analyzing the militarization of internal security.
