Abstract
Description
This paper addresses the growing issue of abandonment of girls and boys in Ixcán (a mainly indigenous population) as a form of violence. This is taking place in post-war Guatemala and with the onslaught of neoliberalism. Child abandonment forms part of a continuum of structural, symbolic and everyday violence. It has repercussions on children as social and historical subjects, who, separated from family and community, are deprived to a large extent of their material and symbolic capital. It also reveals social and family changes in which children are seen as an economic burden for their parents or as a mere commodity. At the same time, the sense of community and –ethnic- belonging are weakened, and the possibilities of flourishing are diminished.
