En el presente artículo, la autora analiza la ‘espectacularización’ mediática en el tratamiento de la violencia y sus ulteriores consecuencias en la calidad de vida de la población ecuatoriana. A partir de una entrada teórica y de la presentación de cifras y datos, Pontón atribuye a la exagerada difusión de la criminalidad y la delincuencia como elemento para capturar sintonía, una distorsión en la percepción social de la seguridad ciudadana, precisamente por la relación que existe entre realidad social e información mediática.
In this article, the author analyzes media ‘spectacularization’ of the treatment of violence, as well as its consequences on the welfare of the Ecuadorian population. Starting from a theoretical basis, and with the help of numbers and data, Pontón concludes that ratings-motivated broadcasting of crime and delinquency causes a distortion of social perception concerning urban safety, given the existing relationship between the social reality and the media’s information.
