Esta obra no se habría escrito á no haber aparecido una publicación con la siguiente portada: Marietta de Veintemilla. — Páginas del Ecuador, en que se relatan como hechos no sólo invenciones y falsedades notorias, sino lo que no es dable tolerar, verdaderas calumnias , expresión que por más que nos duela emplearla, no podemos menos de hacerlo, una vez que es la palabra propia, y que además nos hallamos autorizados por el ejemplo del Vble. Dean de la Arquidiócesis de Quito, Dr. D. José Nieto, varón de virtud austera y carácter apacible, quien no ha vacilado, sin embargo, en intitular así su defensa de la Iglesia y el Clero ecuatorianos, vilipendiados en las Páginas con la falta de razón y de justicia que ha motivado aquella réplica.
