Este artículo demuestra cómo las iniciativas culturales pueden efectivamente reducir la violencia en el contexto del delito y del conflicto armado, usando como ejemplo el caso del Grupo Cultural Afro Reggae en las favelas de Río de Janeiro. La violencia de Río ha sido denominada como un conflicto armado debido a su magnitud y a los motivos que la originan, principalmente la marginalización y el abandono de la población de las favelas. Como otros programas basados en el arte, Afro Reggae previene el delito mediante trasformaciones individuales, ofreciendo empleo y una fuerte identidad a jóvenes en riesgo, contribuyendo a la resolución de conflictos a través de
la transformación del contexto, dando voz a la población oprimida y creando espacios neutrales para encuentros entre partes en conflicto.
This paper demonstrates how cultural initiatives can effectively reduce violence in the contexts of crime and armed conflict, using as example the case of the Cultural Group Afro Reggae in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. Rio’s violence has been referred to as an armed conflict, due to its magnitude and to the grievances that motivate it, principally the marginalization and neglect of favela populations. Like other arts-based programs, Afro Reggae prevents crime by transforming individuals, offering “at-risk” youth jobs and a powerful identity, and contributes to the resolution of the conflict by transforming contexts, giving voice to oppressed populations and creating neutral spaces for encounter among conflicting parties.
