Abstract

Description

In the 1990s, many of Latin American countries carried out reforms to the legislation with the aim of do more flexible labor market issues. Mexico was among the few exceptions in the region by failing to make any changes about it. This investigation presents and discusses the evidence on the demographic and labor conditions of people that has age to work in Mexico, in order to identify the determinants that influence certain groups of people that remained busy for a year, while others passed to unemployment or inactivity. To achieve the objectives, it carried out a quantitative analysis with observations cross-sectional and longitudinal of data from ENOE (by its Spanish acronym Encuesta Nacional de Ocupación y Empleo), obtaining as a result that jobs are increasingly precarious, there is a high mobility in the labor force and a significant proportion of workers are outside the scope of labor regulation. However, temporary contracts are still the exception and dismisses were contained in some measure in the economic crisis of 2008, showing that the labor legislation has important effects on the labor situation.
