En América Latina, el concepto de afrodescendencia designa a los descendientes de hombres y mujeres africanas traficados como esclavos hacia este continente. El término afrodescendiente fue acuñado en la Conferencia de Santiago de Chile, en el marco de la reunión preparatoria de la Conferencia Mundial contra el Racismo, la Discriminación Racial, la Xenofobia y la Intolerancia, celebrada en Durban, Sudáfrica, 2001 (CODAE, 2007:27).
