El medio ambiente no debe ser concebido como simple producto de los factores materiales que conforman el paisaje natural geográfico: el aire, agua, tierra y biodiversidad, sino que forman parte de él las estructuras económicas, sociales y culturales del entorno artificial. De allí la necesidad de un enfoque integral al problema del manejo del medio ambiente. Actualmente, es notable la necesidad de la conservación ambiental del agua, la tierra, la biodiversidad y los ecosistemas en la región amazónica, mucho más si la lucha por la supervivencia, por combatir el hambre y la pobreza, son los problemas básicos a resolver en esta región.
