La subteorización del concepto de sociedad mundial dentro de la Escuela Inglesa continúa planteando interrogantes importantes dentro de esta teoría de las Relaciones Internacionales. Esto ha impedido que se dibuje un panorama completo sobre la realidad internacional, ya que la Escuela Inglesa se caracteriza por plantear que la arena internacional está compuesta por tres conceptos interrelacionados: el sistema internacional, la sociedad internacional y la sociedad mundial. Este trabajo de investigación toma como punto de partida la falta de desarrollo del concepto de sociedad mundial y empieza por plantear una estrategia metodológica basada en el tipo ideal weberiano a fin de establecer las categorías de dicho concepto, y retomando un planteamiento inconcluso de Barry Buzan, emprender la búsqueda de un lugar de la sociedad mundial.
