La victoria fue contundente, como también la derrota. En Bogotá y en Cali, candidatos de izquierda democrática, con mucho de socialismo europeo puesto en típico latinoamericano, barrieron a las fuerzas más poderosas del país representadas en sus respectivos postulados.
Ninguno de los triunfadores es ni ha sido periodista. Los derrotados lo han sido y lo son.
Luis Eduardo Garzón, Lucho, es el alcalde de Bogotá desde el pasado primero de enero y por cuatro años. A duras penas hizo escuela primaria y luego llenó su currículum con seminarios sobre economía, política pero sobre todo, de sindicalismo. Hijo de madre soltera, sufrió y padeció las consecuencias de la pobreza y, por tanto, conoció que los ricos estudian en colegios y los pobres en escuelas y que a unos los recoge un autobús y los otros van a pie. Su permanente defensa de la gente sin dinero no es una postura artificial ni de conveniencia. Y toda su vida es un completo batallar porque haya equidad.
