El conflicto armado en Guatemala terminó por la vía política en diciembre de 1996. La firma de los Acuerdos para una paz firme y duradera marcó el fin del conflicto que duró treinta y seis años, dejando tras de si a miles de personas muertas, desaparecidas y desplazadas. Este proceso histórico se vivió enmarcado en una contexto en el que grandes sectores de la población habían vivido históricamente al margen de la oportunidad de poseer tierra para trabajar, factor que se constituyó como un serio agravante que motivo la incorporación de campesinos al movimiento revolucionario en búsqueda de obtener los medios de subsistencia.
