Un país, al igual que un individuo, produce su propia imagen o nada podrá hacerlo en su lugar (en ninguna otra parte podrá encontrar lo que existe de específico y diferenciado en él: vivencias, paisajes, fisonomías, modos de ser, etc.). La imagen en movimiento constituyó, durante la primera mitad de este siglo, el principal insumo con el cual se desarrolló la producción y el comercio cinematográfico en el mundo. A partir de los años 50, ese insumo encontró nuevas y poderosas formas de diversificación productiva y comercial (televisión, video, satélites, etc.) que impactaron a las viejas industrias del cine. Aquellas que tuvieron la capacidad de adaptarse a la nueva situación -particularmente, la norteamericana-no solo no resultaron perjudicadas, sino que multiplicaron sus posibilidades de expansión interna e internacional. Quienes, como en el caso latinoamericano, no tuvieron la posibilidad de hacerlo, soportaron y siguen soportando los efectos de dicho impacto. Particularmente, en lo referido a la disminución de las salas y de los espectadores de las mismas y, en consecuencia, a su casi exclusiva fuente de financiamiento.
