A medida que avanza el decenio, la popularidad de ciertos conceptos que hacen referencia a una presunta revolución pacífica generada por las "nuevas" tecnologías de la información y la comunicación aumenta sin parar. A juzgar por lo que se afirma reiteradamente, las "autopistas electrónicas" son la fórmula que erradicará definitivamente de nuestras sociedades el desempleo, la penuria, el analfabetismo y la dominación. No obstante, muchos de los presupuestos sobre los que se sustenta este mito son abiertamente insostenibles, o al menos esto es lo que el autor pretende demostrar aquí. Estos presupuestos en torno a la denominada "sociedad de la información" han sido en gran medida generados, o por lo menos divulgados, desde las denominadas ciencias de la comunicación. Es imprescindible que la investigación y la teorización en comunicación no se dejen seducir por ideas atractivas pero poco fundamentadas sobre la "revolución de la información", y que asuman plenamente su cometido analítico y crítico. Esta necesidad se hace más urgente en la medida en que nos hallamos ante la punta de lanza, el mostrador de toda una filosofía ultraliberal, tecnocéntrica y conservadora.
