Este artículo obtuvo el Premio Interamericano de Prensa sobre Medioambiente en la categoría de Diarios y Agencias de Internacionales de noticias, en 1993. La pequeña ciudad de María da Fe, en el sur de Minas, impresiona por sus valles cultivados con banano, tomate zanahoria y principalmente papa. La completa falta de compromiso con el uso de los recursos naturales de esa región de la Sierra da Mantiqueira ya comienza a traer problemas bien concretos a las administraciones públicas y especialmente para la salud de la población. La economía es casi totalmente sustentada por la actividad agrícola, y el abuso de los agrotóxicos, además de la ignorancia general sobre el uso adecuado de estos productos, ya pone en riesgo el abastecimiento de agua y genera constantes perturbaciones físicas en los trabajadores. Los primeros análisis del agua y los sedimentos del río Cambuí, donde se hace la captación de la Copasa (Compañía Estadual de Agua Potable), fueron realizados por la Secretaria Municipal de Desarrollo y Medio Ambiente, Patricia Goulart, que cursa el doctorado en toxicología en la Universidad de Sao Paulo (USP).
