A pesar de que nos permitimos calificar al público o a la audiencia como “su majestad”, la labor investigativa en comunicación –con escasas excepciones- se ha concentrado en el análisis del emisor y el mensaje, con el fundamental propósito de "desenmascarar" la actividad oculta de los omnipotentes medios masivos. Mientras tanto, el pasivo e indefenso receptor debía resignarse, según algunos teóricos, a la manipulación, la dominación y la alienación, suscitadas a partir de estas poderosas "agujas hipodérmicas". Desde el surgimiento del novedoso fenómeno de las comunicaciones de masas en los años veinte, se racionalizó esta manera vertical, unidireccional y fragmentada de ver y analizar los procesos comunicacionales masivos. Los comunicólogos, enclaustrados en nuestra disciplina, olvidamos contexto económico y sociocultural y, lo que es imperdonable, el papel primordial del actor receptor en el proceso de la comunicación: la producción del sentido. En la trayectoria de investigación y reflexión en el campo de la comunicación, se produjo aproximadamente a finales de los años setenta la valiosa ruptura y el notable aporte.
