Existe una enorme diferencia entre información y comunicación. En América Latina se confunden estos conceptos; por ejemplo, cuando se dice los "medios de comunicación social", en realidad se está hablando de "medios de información". La información es, por definición, una estructura vertical, en la que algunos transmiten datos a una gran cantidad de receptores. Este sistema ha predominado hasta los años de la segunda guerra mundial, por la falta de nuevas tecnologías. En cambio, comunicación es un proceso horizontal, participatorio de doble vía; y esto se ha hecho posible solamente en los últimos tiempos, gracias a las nuevas tecnologías electrónicas. En América Latina no existe una sociedad comunicacional; a lo mucho existe una sociedad informativa.
