Los EE.UU y la URSS con solo el 15 por ciento de la población mundial utilizan ambos el 50 por ciento de la órbita geoestacionaria, el Tercer Mundo emplea menos del 10 por ciento. Los Países del Pacto Andino, esto es, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Perú y Venezuela, los cuales cubren un área equivalente a la mitad del continente Europeo, se encuentran trabajando conjuntamente en el uso compartido de un solo sistema satelital, su primer satélite. El plan se llama CONDOR, en honor al símbolo de las alturas de los Andes.
