El escritor mexicano, Carlos Monsiváis, es uno de los intelectuales más reconocidos en la actualidad
por su obra como cronista de Ciudad de México, ensayista, analista de medios masivos,
crítico sobre la cultura y sociedad en América Latina, y, de manera particular, en México. Este
artículo aborda el trabajo periodístico-literario de sus libros de crónicas desde los años setenta
hasta los noventa, dentro de lo cual los conceptos de masa, medios masivos, cultura popular son
centrales. Estos son atendidos a lo largo del artículo tomando en consideración su postura crítica,
sobre todo respecto a la noción de masa. Igualmente se atiende al particular estilo híbrido
de su escritura, así como a la importancia que tiene la paradoja como recurso en su labor crítica
respecto a las relaciones de poder y al traspaso de fronteras de dicotomías.
Mexican writer Carlos Monsiváis is one of the most highly recognized intellectuals today for
his work as the chronicler of Mexico City, essayist, analyst of the mass media, critic of culture
and society in Latin America and, above all, in Mexico. This article approaches the journalisticliterary
work of his collections of chronicles from the sixties to the nineties, within which the
concepts of mass, mass media and popular culture are central. These are analyzed throughout
the article taking into account his critical position, especially with respect to the understanding
of mass. At the same time, the particular hybrid style of his writing is analyzed, as well as the
importance of paradox as a resource in his critical work as regards power relations and the crossing
of the boundaries of dichotomies.
