A presente dissertação aborda a relação entre a divisão sexual do trabalho e o Programa Um Milhão de Cisternas (P1MC) no município de Iramaia, Bahia. Nos três capítulos serão apresentados fatores que corroboram a confirmação da importância de construção e implementação de políticas públicas tendo a questão de gênero como central. Durante a pesquisa ficou evidente que a participação dos movimentos
sociais, em especial movimentos de mulheres é fundamental para a implementação e para o êxito de políticas públicas que combatam a desigualdade de gênero. As entrevistas realizadas com mulheres beneficiadas pelo P1MC foram fundamentais para entender o cotidiano das mulheres rurais e a luta dessas mulheres pela transformação das suas vidas. Percebemos como elas são fundamentais para a garantia da segurança hídrica e alimentar no semiárido. A parir da nova visão de convivência e não
combate à seca foi possível transformar a realidade no sertão. Hoje o acesso a água é mais democrático, porém a pesquisa nos mostrou que a sobrecarga de trabalho doméstico e de cuidados sobre as mulheres sertanejas, que vivem no município pesquisado e foram beneficiadas pelo programa, continua intacta. A cisterna contribui de maneira decisiva para retirar da mulher a tarefa das longas caminhadas diárias, em busca de água limpa, com a lata d’água na cabeça, o que colabora para diversos problemas de saúde acarretados pelo esforço físico. Sem essas caminhadas as mulheres adquirem um “tempo livre” que foi preenchido, principalmente, por tarefas domésticas ou de cuidados. Concluímos que as políticas públicas para as mulheres precisam necessariamente considerar que a divisão sexual do trabalho é central na manutenção da desigualdade de gênero
