A partir del estudio de caso del norte de la Región Amazónica ecuatoriana (RAE), se analizan las princi- pales transformaciones de las economías campesinas de ese sector, durante las dos últimas décadas del nuevo milenio. Se enfatiza, en la influencia de la baja de los precios del café y el cacao, en las economías campesinas de dos cantones de las provincias de Sucumbíos y Orellana, en un contexto caracterizado por la crisis petrolera y la débil presencia de las instituciones de desarrollo del Estado central. En el artículo se describen las relaciones entre las políticas estatales de delimitación de las áreas protegidas y territorios indígenas y la clausura de la frontera agrícola.
