A inicios de los 2000, parecía que el “nuevo constitucionalismo latinoamericano” decretaba el fin del multicultura- lismo, al menos en Bolivia y Ecuador. La década de 1990 había sido fructífera en cuanto al reconocimiento constitucional del modelo multicultural en algunos países del área, al reconocer a los pueblos indígenas como sujetos de derechos colectivos. No obstante, una década más tarde, se debatía -desde una matriz crítica al multiculturalismo- la necesidad de refundar los Estados desde el paradigma de la plurinacionalidad.
