Hay tres planteamientos centrales en el libro: uno es el inconsciente visto como “alma”, lo cual pretende traducir la esencia del sujeto como lo intrínseco entre el preconsciente y el consciente. Para el autor, el inconsciente es el gran artífice de la idea de represión en la sociedad; le guarda “todo” al sujeto. La consciencia es el “deber ser” que frena lo instintivo y el deseo de placer. La segunda premisa plantea el carácter social de la normativización y por tanto, incide en lo inconsciente como representación del poder. Esto ocurre en las sociedades patriarcales y matricéntricas (para el autor, matriestructurales) donde se reproduce también el acto represivo: el que conduce a que los hombres quieran sentirse liberados del poder impuesto por la familia y el estado.
