El vínculo entre el profesional de la salud y el paciente es, quizá, el pilar más importante para el éxito de la prestación de los servicios sanitarios. El choque entre el paternalismo médico, aún presente en la actualidad, y la autonomía irrestricta del paciente, genera una creciente desarmonía entre estos
actores. Los orígenes de esta desarmonía son muchos, pero la formación académica en salud es en parte responsable de ello. Es necesario repensar y actualizar algunos modelos metodológicos de enseñanza, dotando a los estudiantes de competencias humanísticas y bioéticas vinculadas a la práctica clínica/técnica. Las metodologías de enseñanza activa son herramientas útiles para lograr dicho objetivo, dado que fomentan la reflexión crítica de los estudiantes ante los problemas reales, por lo tanto, son una herramienta importante en la formación práctica para el desarrollo de las competencias clínicas y bioéticas junto con la prestación de los servicios sanitarios. Al emplear dicha metodología se busca obtener no solo ventajas para la relación entre el profesional de la salud y el paciente, sino también beneficios en la calidad de la prestación de los servicios, lo que implica mejoras para la salud de la población, que a su vez se refleja en los índices de desarrollo socioeconómico del país.
