La tesis central de este artículo, afirma que desde la época colonial el sistema universitario boliviano ha tenido un déficit de espíritu racionalista, crítico e investigativo, y que esta situación permanece hoy sobre todo en las carreras de ciencias sociales. La mayoría de los estudiantes tendría como meta profesional la adquisición de aptitudes técnicas y no el aprendizaje de métodos científicos. Las fuertes tendencias indianistas, socialistas y nacionalistas no habrían alterado sustancialmente este panorama.
